Downings help Honors students do intensive research
Because of charitable gifts from Perry Downing '81 and Jessica Brezinski Downing '82 to Roanoke College's Honors Distinction Program, Honors students are able to combine their academic and personal interests through a yearlong intensive research program. Perry Downing credits previous alumni for making it possible for him to take part in the Roanoke College work-study program, which helped him prepare for his career in financial services. This kindness is what inspired the Downings to create a similar program to the one that helped them.
"Roanoke students are able to pursue their educational interests at a much more in-depth manner, and with this gift to the college, we want to memorialize our legacy to the college and support the honors program," Perry Downing said.
The Downings remember their time as students at Roanoke College fondly, and they felt it important that they plan their gift in this way.
"Seeing the students grow in what they've created, what their ideas are, and watching that come to fruition will really be very rewarding," said Jessica Downing.
Supporting a place so influential and formative in their lives created a sense of fulfillment because "a little bit of giving can really go a long way," she added.
The gift of a scholarship to a fellow Maroon pursuing an undergraduate degree is a priceless gift and an investment in their future. Perry and Jessica Downing said they encourage all alumni to "come back on campus and discuss a way to support the college that meets with your interests and your family goals, as well as those of the college."
